AC or furnace failed — Tulsa checklist
When the house is 85°F at midnight or the furnace won’t fire in an ice storm, panic shopping gets expensive. Run through this short list first, then call a Tulsa HVAC shop with clear symptoms.
Tulsa patternCooling season is long and humid; the first hard freeze finds skipped furnace maintenance. Dual-fuel and heat-pump homes have their own quirks — tell the dispatcher what system you have.
Before you call (safe checks)
- Thermostat — mode, setpoint, fresh batteries if it’s battery-powered.
- Breaker / disconnect — did a breaker trip? Outdoor disconnect switched off?
- Filter — a packed filter can freeze an AC coil or starve a furnace.
- Vents — closed supply vents and blocked returns make “weak airflow” calls.
- Outdoor unit — leaves, cottonwood fluff, or ice restricting the condenser.
- Gas furnace — if you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility / 911 — don’t keep troubleshooting.
What to tell the dispatcher
- Age and brand of the system if you know them; last service date.
- Exact symptoms: no cool air, ice on lines, short cycling, error codes on the thermostat.
- Whether anyone else already “topped off refrigerant” recently (that’s a clue, not a fix).
Hiring notes
Ask for Oklahoma CIB mechanical license and insurance. Get repair vs replace options in writing with parts warranty. Then browse local shops:
