How to hire and verify a license in Oklahoma
Before anyone opens a wall, climbs a roof, or touches a panel, spend ten minutes verifying who you’re hiring. Oklahoma’s Construction Industries Board (CIB) licenses several trades — and “my buddy’s cousin” is not a license number.
What CIB usually coversMechanical (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, and roofing work commonly require CIB licensing for residential jobs. Pure landscaping and seasonal Christmas light hanging typically do not — for those, lean on insurance, references, and a clear written scope instead.
Steps before you sign
- Get the license number in writing — business name as licensed, not just a trade name on a truck magnet.
- Look it up on the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board public license search (cib.ok.gov). Confirm status is active and matches the person/company quoting you.
- Ask for proof of liability insurance (and workers’ comp or exemption for roofing crews). Call the insurer if the certificate looks off.
- Get 2–3 written quotes with the same scope — materials, labor, permits, disposal, and warranty.
- Never pay 100% upfront for large jobs. Reasonable deposits exist; “cash today or price doubles” is a red flag.
Red flags
- No license number, or “we don’t need one for this.”
- Door-to-door after a storm with high-pressure insurance paperwork.
- Only a cell phone, no local address or references.
- Quote that is dramatically cheaper than everyone else with no explanation.
