After wind or hail — Tulsa roof checklist
Tulsa’s storm season can put golf-ball hail and straight-line winds on the same roof in one afternoon. Slow down, document, and hire carefully — especially when crews from out of state show up the next morning.
Local contextNortheast Oklahoma sits in a frequent hail corridor. Fall is often a better install window than the week after a regional outbreak, when every calendar is slammed. A free directory listing is not the same as Google Maps “near me” — verify license and insurance yourself.
Right after the storm
- Stay off the roof if it’s wet, steep, or damaged — photos from the ground and attic first.
- Dated photos of shingles, dents on metal (A/C fins, gutters, fencing), and interior stains.
- Tarp only if you can do it safely or a pro can — temporary dry-in beats a flooded ceiling.
- Call your insurer when you’re ready; keep a simple log of who you spoke with.
Talking to roofers
- Oklahoma CIB roofing license number — look it up before signing.
- Liability insurance and workers’ comp (or exemption) documentation.
- Written scope: tear-off vs overlay, underlayment, ventilation, drip edge, permit who pulls it.
- Who handles debris and magnet-nail sweeps?
Storm-chaser red flags
- Pressure to sign insurance paperwork the same day on the porch.
- Offers to “waive your deductible” (often illegal / against policy terms).
- Out-of-state plates, no local references, only a burner phone.
